Stephanie Hsu is an American actress, who portrays the recurring character of Shiji Niangniang in Disney+'s original series American Born Chinese.
General overview[]
Hsu's maternal grandmother moved from Mainland China to Taiwan to escape the Chinese Civil War. As a teenager, Hsu's mother moved to the United States for a better education.[2] She's known for her breakout performance as Joy/Jobu Tupaki in A24 & Daniels' Everything Everywhere All at Once, which she starred alongside Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan. As well as her work as Mei on Season 3 and 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Joy on Hulu's cult drama The Path[3], and MTV's Girl Code. She made her start in experimental, downtown theater in New York, which eventually led her to Broadway as Karen the Computer in "SpongeBob The Musical," and as Christine Canigula in the viral sensation Be More Chill. She is a graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts, where she studied at the Atlantic Theater Company and the Experimental Theater Wing[4].
On June 28, 2023, Hsu was among hundreds of artists including co-star Ke Huy Quan to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the organization that produces the Oscars.In a news release sent to CNN on Wednesday, the Academy announced they’ve invited 398 artists and executives “who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to motion pictures”.[5]
