Shiji Niangniang (石磯娘娘), better known as Lady Rocky, is a is a supporting character in the Disney+ original series American Born Chinese portrayed by Stephanie Hsu.
Background[]
Shiji Niangniang used to be a regular rock who through sheer determination, and the celestial powers, managed to will herself into a powerful being. In most tellings, she is a stern character who lacked compassion and would usually be an antagonist, particularly to Nezha. She is depicted as being the mother of several demons and monsters and her story usually ended with her getting killed.
Personality[]
Contrary to most depictions, Shiji is a friendly, albeit sarcastic, person who is willing to help anyone for a price. She and Guanyin are shown being friends and even though her pet Pixiu was punished, she still manage to find humor in his new form. Shiji does not seem to care at all for anyone's personal lives, yet when it comes to selling her goods, she will not hesitate to manipulate customers.
Physical appearance[]
Shiji resembles a young and pleasant looking Chinese woman. To match with her business, she dresses in nice clothes, accompanied by earrings, necklaces and rings with various gems in them.
History[]
Season 1[]
In Hot Stuff, Guanyin decides to help Wei-Chen, by taking Christine Wang and Simon Wang's jade pendant to Shiji Niangniang, known as Lady Rocky (a name that she apparently gave herself). Shiji, now an owner of Jewel of the Orient, swindles a customer before being greeted by Guanyin and the other deity introducing her pet Pixiu to the Goddess of Mercy, who was transformed into a dog for pooping in the Jade Emperor's pond and had his butt sealed up. Guanyin tells her about the jade necklace and asks that she check if it is the fourth scroll. Shiji agrees, but wants payment and ask that she have her beaded bracelet, which Guanyin got as a gift from Nezha. Pixiu has the ability to eat stones; but he spits out the celestial stones and swallows Earth based ones. After eating and spitting the beaded bracelet, Guanyin hands the jade pendant to Pixiu.
In Beyond Repair, Guanyin informs the boys that the jade pendant is not the fourth scroll and they cannot even use it to barter with Niu Mowang as Pixiu ate it and because they weren't celestial stones, Shiji's dog swallowed it.
Trivia[]
- While her name is officially spelled the traditional way, the subtitles spell her name as Shi Ji.
