Ronny Chieng (Chinese: 钱信伊) is a Malaysian comedian, writer, producer and actor. He portrays the recurring character of Ji Gong, commonly known as the Mad Monk, a mythical figure in Disney+'s original series American Born Chinese.

General overview[]

He attended the University of Melbourne in Australia, living at Trinity College and graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in finance and a Bachelor of Laws degree. He also obtained a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University in 2012.[1] He started performing stand-up in 2009 after graduating with a dual degree in Law and Commerce from The University of Melbourne, Australia. His act caught the attention of the esteemed Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, where he performed in 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016. There he was noticed by comedians and talent scouts who helped him launch sold-out stand-up tours in Australia, Hong Kong, and Canada[2]. In 2018, he made his film debut in Crazy Rich Asians, as Eddie Cheng, an obnoxious banker.[3] On February 10, 2023, in a teaser trailer for American Born Chinese it displayed a long list of an all-star international cast and featured guest stars. Among the guest stars listed are Chieng, Rosalie Chiang,James Hong, Stephanie Hsu, Poppy Liu, Lisa Lu,Jimmy O. Yang and Leonard Wu to name a few.[4]
