Princess Iron Fan (铁扇公主) , is a supporting character in the Disney+ original series American Born Chinese portrayed by Poppy Liu.
Background[]
In the classic tellings, Princess Iron Fan is not a goddess, but rather a high class demoness who is worshipped as one and the wife of Niu Mowang. She manipulated a village by fanning the fire mountains for them. Sun Wukong asked for her fan, but she refused to give it up, forcing him to turn into a fly and attack her insides. After some back and forth, Princess Iron Fan was forced to give up her fan by the Jade Emperor. Wukong apologized to her and she in turn apologized for her stinginess.
Personality[]
Iron Fan is shown to be very reserved, but is implied to be a very crafty person. Following the defeat of her husband, she confronted Jin Wang and threatened his parents if he did not come with her.
Physical appearance[]
Iron Fan resembles a very pleasant looking Chinese woman and in her first appearance wore an extravagant violet dress with a hair bun. In her Earth disguise, she wears dark clothes that slightly match Niu Mowang.
Powers and abilities[]
As her name implies, Iron Fan possesses a small iron fan that has the ability to create large powerful gusts of wind.
History[]
Season 1[]
In Make a Splash, she and Princess Jade Face meet Sun Wukong and Niu Mowang at the Heavenly Banquet. Mowang tells Iron Fan his dream and she becomes smitten with him. When Guang passes through the party, Iron Fan uses her magic fan so that Wukong and Mowang can follow Ao Guang. Afterwards, Iron Fan meets with Mowang and offers that he visit her at her home at Fire Mountain, which he is pleased by.
In The Fourth Scroll, once her husband is defeated by the combined forces of the Monkey King, Wei-Chen, Anuj and Jin Wang, she takes Christine Wang and Simon Wang captive, and is waiting for Jin to get home. She demands that he come with her if he ever wants to see his parents again. However, Jin fails to catch the last part as she was speaking in Mandarin and he didn't understand all of it.
Trivia[]
- In Make a Splash, Princess Iron Fan is shown to be friends with Princess Jade Face.
- However, in Journey to the West, Niu Mowang would go onto cheat on Iron Fan with Jade Face.
